Greece is known for its antiquities. Ancient Olympia, Delphi, Epidaurus, and of course the Acropolis. Hundreds of thousands of tourists visit these site every year. But as time passes, more sites are discovered and unearthed. One of those relatively unknown sites is the archaeological site of Ancient Messene.

Messene is a significant ancient city in terms of its size, form, and state of preservation, and still has much to offer. It possesses not only sanctuaries and public buildings, but also imposing fortifications, and houses and tombs. It enjoys, amongst other things, the advantage of never having been destroyed or covered by later settlements, and is located on an unspoiled inland site. Its natural setting combines the grandeur of the mountains of Delphi with the low-lying, riverine tranquillity of Olympia, the dominating bare limestone mass of Ithome, the site of the ancient acropolis, with the low fertile valley around the ancient city.

To reach Messene from Athens you have to drive through the highway Corinth – Tripolis – Megalopolis – Kalamata or Corinth – Patras – Pyrgos – Kyparissia – Meligalas. From Olympia the journey to Messene lasts only 1 and 1/2 hr by car (around 75km.)

If you decide to visit Athens, especially during the summer time you should definitely visit 6 D.O.G.S garden. In a former completely run down place the intervention in the garden of the 6 D.O.G.S Cultural Centre in central Athens, returns the site to its natural state.

In a city that systematically builds on its fragmented open space, the 600 square metre garden supports the operation of a busy cafe and bar with a few key moves that merge with the natural setting. A wooden bar and wooden furniture, plus simple lights hanging from the trees, makes for all the equipment, allowing for a rare sense of the ‘situation of nature’ that is so missing in the area. Colourful ‘dressing’ of select trees heightens their presence. The garden as about space before human intervention, a place about the pleasure of nature and the appreciation of the void.

These last two years, Greece has been in the spotlight of Media. Financial crisis and the needed structural changes have led to demonstrations, strikes and many kinds of protests.

So is it safe to come? Undoubtedly yes!

Although we are going through tough times, we know very well that tourism is one the few strong sectors of the economy. This year, in the midst of all, the number of tourists that visited Greece, jumped up 10%. The overall touristic product of Greece has undergone serious improvement in the last decade both in terms of infrastructure and services.

Although in the tourist business for six decades, Greece remains and unexplored country for many of the foreigners with hidden treasures waiting to be discovered
